What Is a Microbrand Watch? Why Collectors Are Skipping Big Brands

If you've spent any time in watch forums or on watch YouTube, you've seen the word "microbrand." Here's what it actually means, why collectors increasingly prefer them over mall brands, and what to check before you buy one.

What counts as a microbrand?

A microbrand is a small, independent watch company, usually founded by an enthusiast rather than a corporation, that produces watches in small numbered runs and sells directly to customers online. No department stores, no licensing deals, no marketing budgets with celebrity ambassadors.

Why the value is better

When you buy a big-brand watch at retail, a large share of the price pays for advertising, distribution, and retail markup. A microbrand selling direct puts that money into the watch itself. That's why a $150 to $200 microbrand watch frequently matches the build quality of mass-market watches selling for two or three times more: 316L stainless steel cases, proper case finishing, guilloché dials, and proven movements like Seiko's VK-series meca-quartz chronographs.

The other reason: you won't see it on everyone else

Mass-market watches are produced in the hundreds of thousands. Microbrand runs are often capped at 100 pieces per colorway. For collectors, that scarcity is a feature. Your watch is genuinely uncommon, and sold-out runs are gone for good.

What to check before buying a microbrand watch

Case material: 316L stainless steel is the standard worth insisting on.

Proportions: 39mm diameter with a roughly 45mm lug-to-lug fits the widest range of wrists. Check the thickness too. Under 12mm wears best.

A proven movement: named Japanese calibers (like the Seiko VK63 chronograph) are reliable and easy to service. Be wary of listings that don't name the movement at all.

Water resistance and warranty: 10 ATM and a written warranty are signs the brand stands behind its build.

Production numbers: a real limited run should say so plainly (e.g., 100 pieces per colorway).

A reachable human: the best microbrands are run by people who answer their own messages. If you can email the founder directly, that's a good sign for warranty and service questions later.

Where we fit

JourneyAboutTime is a one-person California microbrand. Every Season watch is designed from scratch and hand-assembled. Our Season #1 (from $149) is a 39mm watch just 9.8mm thick in 316L steel, and Season #2 ($199) is a chronograph limited to 100 pieces per colorway, running the Seiko VK63 meca-quartz movement with a diamond-pattern guilloché dial and 10 ATM water resistance. Choose from Midnight Gold, Silver Snow, and Trinity.

Every order ships free worldwide, includes a travel case and a free Autism Awareness watch, and is backed by a one-year movement warranty. If you have questions you'll get an answer from the founder, not a support queue: journeyabouttime@gmail.com.

Whether or not you buy from us, the checklist above will steer you toward microbrands that respect your money, and away from the ones that don't.
