Blue Dial Watches: Why Midnight Blue Goes With Everything

Midnight blue goes with almost everything because it behaves like navy in your closet: dark enough to read as a neutral, but with more life than black. It pairs with black, gray, brown, white, denim and navy itself. And a good midnight-blue dial shifts with the light, looking nearly black indoors and clearly blue outside.

If you want one watch that feels a little more interesting than black but never fights your clothes, a dark blue dial is the safest bet I know.

Why does a blue dial go with everything?

Think about the clothes most people already own. Jeans are blue. A lot of suits and blazers are navy. Chinos come in khaki, gray and navy. Blue sits comfortably next to all of them because it already belongs to the same color group.

Black is the other "goes with everything" dial, and it is a great choice. The difference is warmth. Black can look a little flat in daylight. Dark blue gives you depth without turning into a loud color.

What are the different shades of blue dial?

  • Sky or light blue: bright, casual, summery. Fun, but it reads as a color choice, not a neutral.
  • Royal blue: saturated and bold. Very noticeable across a room.
  • Navy: the classic. Dark, calm, easy.
  • Midnight blue: darker than navy, close to black in dim light. The most flexible of the group.

The darker you go, the more the dial acts like a neutral. The lighter you go, the more it acts like an accessory you are matching to.

What should you wear with a blue dial watch?

Short version: almost anything. A few combinations that always work:

  • White or light blue shirt with navy or gray trousers. The office standard, and a blue dial was made for it.
  • Gray suit. Gray and blue are one of the oldest pairings in menswear.
  • Jeans and a white T-shirt. The blue in the dial picks up the denim.
  • Brown leather shoes and belt. Blue and brown look warm and relaxed together.
  • Black. It works, especially with a very dark blue that almost matches.

The only thing I would avoid is trying to match the exact shade of your shirt to the dial. Close shades that don't quite match look like a mistake. Contrast is easier.

Steel or gold with a blue dial?

Both work, and they say different things. Blue with steel feels cool, clean and sporty. Blue with gold feels warmer and dressier, and the gold tends to make the blue look richer by contrast. If you already wear gold rings or a gold-tone belt buckle, blue and gold ties it together. If most of your metal is silver, steel is the easier match.

Why does my blue dial look black indoors?

Because a dark blue dial needs light to show its color. Under office lighting or at dinner, a midnight-blue dial can read almost black. Step outside and it turns deep blue. A textured dial makes this stronger. A pattern like guilloché catches light at different angles, so the color moves as you turn your wrist. If you are curious how that texture is made, here is my guide to what a guilloché dial is.

Some people see this as a downside. I think it is the best part. You get a watch that is quiet at work and has something to show in the sun.

Is a blue dial too casual for a suit?

No. Navy and midnight blue are among the most formal colors in clothing. A dark blue dial on a slim watch looks right with a suit. The things that make a watch too casual are size, thickness and a chunky sport design, not the dial color.

My pick: Season No. 2 Midnight Gold

When I designed Season No. 2 Midnight Gold, this was exactly the effect I wanted. The dial is a midnight-blue diamond-pattern guilloché. Indoors it looks almost black. In sunlight it turns a deep blue and the pattern shows up. The hands are polished gold, and the case and bracelet have a gold-tone finish over 316L stainless steel. It is the dressiest of the three Season No. 2 colors.

It is still a watch you can wear every day. It is a 39mm mecaquartz chronograph running the Seiko VK63, 11.8mm thick, with 10 ATM (100m) water resistance. It is $199, limited to 100 pieces, and every caseback is engraved with its own number out of 100. It won't be restocked.

If you want blue with steel instead, Season No. 1 in Sky Blue pairs a lighter blue dial with silver hands on a leather strap. It is in its final pieces. You can see every color in the Season watch collection, or read my buyer's guide to watches under $200 for a wider look.

Quick answers

Is a blue dial watch versatile?

Yes. A dark blue dial works like navy clothing. It pairs with black, gray, brown, white and denim, at work or on weekends.

Is navy or midnight blue better for a watch dial?

Both are flexible. Midnight blue is darker and closer to black indoors, so it is the more neutral of the two.

Does a blue dial go with a gold case?

Yes. Gold warms up blue and makes it look richer. It is a dressier look than blue with steel.
